MomsRising of the Pioneer Valley Advocates for Midwifery at CDH


12 people attended a discussion on the future of midwifery at Cooley Dickinson Hospital on Wednesday, May 30 in Northampton, MA. The events was organized by MomsRising of the Pioneer Valley, the political arm of MotherWoman, Inc. Speakers for the event were: Chidlbirth Educator and community birth activist Vicki Elson, CCE and Pam Drexler, CNM, from Hampshire OB/GYN, the practice that is discontinuing midwifery care as of June, 2007.

Elson and Drexler spoke summarized the current crisis in midwifery care at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Those in attendance discussed the issue, and decided to take the following actions: 1) those in attendance agreed to write letters to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in support of midwifery, and encouraging the hospital to develop a plan to continue midwifery at the hospital. 2) to contact Cooley Dickinson Hospital's COO,CNO Carol Smith inviting her to join a community discussion/focus group to hear from local mothers their thoughts and ideas about a midwifery practice at Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
