October '06 - We made the nightly news! Channel 22 did a segment on MotherWoman, particularly on the Postpartum Support Group on Tuesdays in Northampton. This is a wonderful thing. The more we (individually and collectively) talk about the whole truth of mothering, the light and the dark, the more whole we can be as mothers and as women. -Meguey More Help Available to Women Who Suffer From Postpartum Depression NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - One in four women will develop postpartum depression at some point in their lives. There's a new support group that reaches out to women who suffer from depression after childbirth. Postpartum depression has been in the news lately with the celebrity debate between Brook Shields, Tom Cruise. Even Mark Foley, who sent those instant messages to congressional pages, blamed postpartum depression. In reality, the condition affects many everyday people as well. At the Childcare Outlook Building on Vernon Street in Northampton, the group Mother Woman Incorporated is holding free support groups for those suffering from postpartum depression. This is the only postpartum stress reduction and support group in the Pioneer Valley. The program is made possible by a grant by the Hampshire County Family Network, and reaches out to mothers who need somewhere to turn. Mother Woman Inc., founder Annette Cycon told 22News, "Motherhood is a beautiful experience, and it's also the most difficult thing we'll ever do. Don't feel as if you should be ashamed of feeling how hard it is. Speak to people and reach out for help." Postpartum depression affected Meg Baker. She said, "To be in that place with all these other women going through exactly the same transition...It was my third child, and I was a facilitator, but even so, I gained so much by being with a community of women who knew exactly what I was going through." Anyone who wants to participate can drop in; the group is held from 10:30-12:30 at the Childcare Outlook Building on Vernon Street, in Northampton. |
