MotherWoman works with Cooley Dickinson Hospital to Restore Midwifery

MomsRising of the Pioneer Valley, the political arm of MotherWoman has organized two focus groups for Cooley Dickinson Hospital to ensure that mother?s voices are heard and integrated into plans for a new community midwifery practice in Northampton. Held on June 27 and July 17, the focus groups provided open forums for mothers in the community to exchange ideas with Cooley Dickinson Hospital?s CEO Carol Smith, who is enthusiastically spearheading the hospital?s efforts to restore midwifery. Moderated by MomsRising leader and MotherWoman Board President, Victoria Munroe, the groups were lively, productive, and attended by over 30 women. Participants included mothers, midwives, childbirth educators, MotherWoman staff and Board members, MomsRising members, doulas and others concerned citizens. ?

"I was very impressed by the collective power and spirit of problem-solving in that room",?stated MotherWoman Executive Director, Melanie DeSilva, who attended the June 27 event. "?It is clear that everyone in that room wants the same thing. A strong, midwifery practice at Cooley Dickinson Hospital. Making sure that mothers have a full range of choices for birth providers is very important to us. We deeply appreciate Carol Smith?s warmth and willingness to work with us."? A recent Daily Hampshire Gazette article about Cooley Dickinson's hospitals efforts to restore midwifery discussed these focus groups, quoting our own Victoria Munroe. Additional focus groups may be organized.
